Global Health EDCTP3

About this platform

The EU-Africa partnership that succeeded EDCTP2, funding health research with mandatory sub-Saharan African participation. It matters here because of scale rather than volume of listings — individual awards run to millions of euros, and Malawian institutions are expected participants, not tolerated extras. One structural limit must be stated plainly to staff: the legal coordinator of a Horizon Europe consortium must normally be based in an EU Member State or Associated Country, and among sub-Saharan African countries only South Africa holds the agreement permitting coordination. Malawi joins as a full partner and can hold scientific leadership of a work package, but not the coordinator role.

Getting access

Applications are submitted through the EU Funding and Tenders Portal, which requires a free EU Login account and a Participant Identification Code for the institution.

Browse the calls page without an account. To apply, UNIMA needs an EU Login and a PIC — DRIPS should confirm the University's PIC is registered and current now, because obtaining one mid-application is a common cause of missed EU deadlines.

Training and innovation networks for sustained capacity development related to ethics, regulatory, pharmacovigilance, and related digital regulatory platforms (HORIZON-JU-GH-EDCTP3-2026-03-SERP-01)

Global Health EDCTP3 Joint Undertaking

This topic funds the unglamorous infrastructure that determines whether health research can happen at all: ethics committees, national regulatory authorities, pharmacovigilance systems and the digital platforms that run them. The target is regulatory agencies below WHO Maturity Level 3, mentored by ML3 and ML4 agencies, through training and twinning networks. For a country whose research ethics and regulatory capacity are a recognised bottleneck, this is more consequential than its low profile suggests.
