British Academy Talent Development Awards 2026-27

Funded by the UK Department for Science, Innovation and Technology, the Talent Development Awards help humanities and social-science researchers acquire and advance skills in core areas — advanced quantitative methods, data science, digital humanities, and languages — and pilot new methods. The awards are explicitly designed to lay the methodological groundwork for larger grant applications later and can be used to support collaborative and partnership working locally, nationally, or internationally.

The Lead Applicant must be ordinarily resident in the United Kingdom and hold a current long-term appointment at a UK Higher Education Institution or Independent Research Organisation lasting the full award period; independent researchers without an institutional affiliation are ineligible.

Co-applicants may be based in the UK or overseas and may hold a doctorate, equivalent experience, or other specialist knowledge relevant to the scheme's aims - which is the route through which a Malawi-based researcher qualifies. There are no subject quotas or thematic priorities.

Skills and capacity development in advanced quantitative methods, data science and digital research methods; cross-disciplinary and cross-sector knowledge and skills exchange; language learning and the transferable skills it brings; and piloting new research methods, including through collaborative partnership working.

The award is not intended as a time buy-out for the award holder — it funds the engagement and skills activity itself. It is not offered on a Full Economic Costing basis, so no indirect-cost recovery is available, and every pound must be spent on the activity set out in the application. Independent researchers without an institutional base cannot apply, and the Lead Applicant cannot be based outside the UK.

The UK-based Lead Applicant applies through the British Academy's Flexi-Grant® grant management system, naming overseas co-applicants on the application.
