Emerging Global Leader Award (K43)

The K43 is a career development award that protects a junior faculty member's time to build an independent research career at their own low- or middle-income country institution. Two parallel announcements run: PAR-24-296, where no independent clinical trial is allowed, and PAR-24-295, where the candidate leads an independent clinical trial. Both require the LMIC institution itself to be the applicant organisation, one LMIC-based and one US-based mentor, and research addressing the health priorities of the candidate's own country.

The applicant organisation must be an academic education or research institution in an LMIC. The candidate must be a citizen or permanent resident of an eligible LMIC, hold at least a research master's (doctorate preferred), have held a primary junior-faculty appointment at the applicant institution for at least a year, and commit 75% effort. Candidates who have already been PD/PI on an R01, P01, P50, D43 or an equivalent K award are ineligible. Foreign subawards and subcontracts are not permitted under this announcement.

Research must be conducted primarily in the LMIC.

Candidate salary at up to US$100,000 per year for a minimum 75% effort, and up to US$40,000 per year for research supplies, equipment, travel, training and statistical services, across a three- to five-year project period.

Mentor salaries, administrative assistants and secretarial costs; foreign subawards or subcontracts of any kind; salary funds transferred to research support; concurrent duplicate NIH career development applications.

Submit through Grants.gov and eRA Commons against PAR-24-296 (no independent clinical trial) or PAR-24-295 (independent clinical trial required). Required elements include a career development plan showing progression to independence, an LMIC primary mentor and a US primary mentor each with a mentoring track record, and at least eight contact hours of responsible conduct of research training.
