HORIZON EUROPE - Optimising the water–nutrient–energy nexus for sustainable and climate-smart agriculture in Africa (FNSSA)
European Commission — Horizon Europe · European Union
Overview
HORIZON-CL6-2027-02-FARM2FORK-02: This two-stage call supports integrated research on the water–nutrient–energy nexus in African smallholder and commercial agriculture, examining how trade-offs and synergies between water use, fertiliser application, and energy consumption can be optimised for climate-smart, productive, and sustainable outcomes. The two-stage process means a short Stage 1 concept note is submitted first, with full proposals submitted only by invited applicants.
Eligibility
A minimum of three independent legal entities from three different EU Member States or Horizon Europe Associated Countries is required (for most calls). African institutions, including UNIMA, are explicitly eligible and encouraged as consortium partners to receive EU funding directly. Coordination must be led by an EU/Associated Country organisation. Agricultural engineers, agronomists, hydrologists, energy specialists, and social scientists working on African farming systems are the primary audience.
How to apply
Proposals are submitted through the EU Funding and Tenders Portal (https://ec.europa.eu/info/funding-tenders/opportunities/portal/).
UNIMA's validated Participant Identification Code (PIC) is 999453275.
The first step is to identify a European lead partner. UNIMA's existing collaborations with universities in the UK, Germany, the Netherlands, Norway, Belgium, and other EU/Associated Countries are the natural starting point. EURAXESS Africa (https://euraxess.ec.europa.eu/worldwide/africa) organises partner-matching webinars and publishes consortium-building notices for Africa Initiative calls.
