Food and Agriculture Organization of the United Nations (FAO)

The Food and Agriculture Organisation of the United Nations is the UN specialised agency leading international efforts to defeat hunger and achieve food security. It has 194 members — 193 countries and the European Union — and operates in more than 130 countries across agriculture, fisheries, forestry and agrifood systems. FAO is not a conventional research council: rather than a standing grants programme, it funds research and innovation through technical cooperation with member governments, competitive calls for analytical and assessment work in which universities and research institutes are eligible applicants, and innovation challenges run with partners such as the Smart Africa Secretariat.
