Gerda Henkel Foundation

The Gerda Henkel Foundation is a private German foundation established in 1976 in Dusseldorf, funding research in the historical humanities — history, archaeology, art history, legal history, prehistory and early history, the history of science, and historical Islamic studies. It awards research scholarships to postdoctoral and post-habilitation scholars and grants for research projects, with monthly stipend rates, family allowances, travel and material costs. Its eligibility rules are unusually open: applications are accepted regardless of the applicant's nationality or place of work, with no requirement for a German or European host institution. Committees meet twice yearly, and smaller project grants are assessed on a rolling basis.
