Which Malawi eligibility category applies to you

Worldwide, Africa, sub-Saharan Africa, LMIC, LDC — how Malawi qualifies, and why it matters for filtering.
Funders define eligibility by geography in several overlapping ways. Malawi qualifies under each of these, which is why a single call can carry more than one geography tag:
- Worldwide — open to applicants anywhere, Malawi included.
- Africa / sub-Saharan Africa — continental or regional schemes; many target African-led research.
- Low- and middle-income countries (LMICs) — defined by World Bank income group. Malawi is included.
- Least-developed countries (LDCs) — a UN category. Malawi is included, and some calls give LDC applicants priority or reserved places.
- Developing countries / Commonwealth — broader groupings used by some funders.
Why it matters
Some of the most winnable calls are those restricted to LMICs, LDCs or Africa, because the applicant pool is smaller and Malawi is squarely in scope (for example, several global-health and capacity-building schemes). Use the eligibility filter on the funding-calls page to surface these first.
Host-based schemes
A few prestigious schemes are awarded to an institution in another country to host you — the application is made by the host. These still appear here because a Malawian researcher is the intended beneficiary; read the eligibility note carefully to see who submits.
