Overview

AMBER funds postdoctoral research in advanced multiscale biological imaging using Europe's major research infrastructures — synchrotron, neutron and structural biology facilities that do not exist in Malawi. Forty-seven positions are on offer across seven host institutions. This is the programme's final call: there will be no further AMBER rounds after this one.

Eligibility

Open to researchers of any nationality, with no requirement to hold a prior European post — so a Malawi-based applicant qualifies. Applicants must be within eight years of the PhD, must have defended before the deadline, need at least one peer-reviewed publication and have English at CEFR B2. The standard mobility rule bars applicants who have lived or worked in the specific host country for more than twelve months in the previous three years, which does not disadvantage a Malawi-based candidate. A maximum of three applications per person.

What is funded

Full salary on a three-year employment contract, a monthly research budget, and access to the consortium's imaging infrastructure and training programme.

What is not funded

Check the applicant guide.

Applicants who have already spent more than twelve months in the host country in the last three years are ineligible.

How to apply

Apply through the AMBER portal with a Europass CV, a research plan tailored to each specific position, a draft Individual Career Development Plan, two reference letters, an ethics self-assessment and evidence of English proficiency. Shortlisted applicants submit a short personal video.

Timeline: Applications close 24 August 2026 | Final call — no further AMBER rounds will follow
