UNESCO/Japan Young Researchers' Fellowships Programme (Keizo Obuchi) 2026

UNESCO, with the Government of Japan · France

A research residency in Japan for young researchers from UNESCO member states, funded by the Japanese government. The 2026 cycle is organised around five themes: heritage conservation; AI for natural resource management and climate; ethical and inclusive AI; AI for cities and infrastructure; and AI and education. That thematic shape makes it one of the few routes in this digest that touches education research, which is otherwise almost entirely absent.

SATREPS FY2027 — Science and Technology Research Partnership for Sustainable Development

JST (or AMED) with JICA — Government of Japan · Japan

SATREPS funds three-to-five-year joint research projects between Japanese research institutions and institutions in developing countries, on problems that matter both locally and globally. It is unusual among funders because it couples a competitive research grant with Japanese Official Development Assistance: JST (or AMED) funds the Japanese side's research, while JICA delivers technical cooperation — equipment, Japanese researcher visits, training, and research costs incurred in the partner country. The programme is run by JST, AMED, JICA, MOFA, and MEXT together. More information is provided in the Resources section.

Zentrum für interdisziplinäre Forschung (ZiF), Bielefeld University · Germany

ZiF funds small interdisciplinary teams to spend one to three months working together at Bielefeld's institute for interdisciplinary research. Unlike most European institute schemes, there is no requirement to already hold a European post: applicants may be based at a university or research institute in Germany or abroad, and a Malawi-based academic can be a lead convenor. That makes this the most straightforwardly usable European residency in this digest.
